When you hear someone say they need to upgrade, repair or replace a meter board or fuse box it may be hard to believe that over 60% of Australia do not have adequate protection from power surges and outages.

Here are the top 3 ways to tell your meter board needs repairing.

(And if you have any of these are symptoms call your electrician immediately. )

1. Your lights and appliances flicker when an air conditioner, dryer, stove, etc is on.

2. Your lights and appliances flicker on a regular basis or your light sockets are hot to the touch.

3. You have experienced a flash-over in an electrical socket that has damaged the wiring, outlet or switch (Or anything attached.)

Electrical problems can be very hard to diagnose because there are so many variables involved; such as your home’s electrical system, age of appliances and wiring.

The good news is that just about any licensed electrician can help you to diagnose the problem with a minimum amount of fuss. (And usually for not much more than what it would cost to hire an electrician to check out the problem). How do you know if they are a licensed electrician? Ask them for their license number and make sure they are licensed to install or work on electrical systems.

If you do not have any of these problems but you think your system is old, it probably is time to have it upgraded.

How can you tell if your system is old? Well, how old are the fuse boxes and breakers in your home? How old is your meter board? How many circuits does it take to run all of the electronic gadgets that household has now days? That is not to mention all those extension cords under the house or in the garage. How many? How old are they? How long have you had them? Are they still in good shape or have any of them been frayed by rodents chewing on them.

Be proactive and call someone who knows what they are doing to check it out. How often do you need your vehicle checked for mechanical problems? How often should you have a licensed electrician come and look at your electrical system?

How much is that little “surge” going to cost you if everything doesn’t get replaced immediately? How many of those old extension cords are actually fire hazards?
